Three Pairs of Shoes Will Carry Ninety Per Cent of Your Week

Most wardrobes hold twenty pairs and rotate three. Choose those three deliberately and the rest becomes optional.

Leather flats, a block-heel sandal and a white sneaker on pale stone

The working trio

A leather flat, a comfortable block heel and one clean white sneaker cover work, evening and weekend for almost everyone. Everything else is weather or occasion.

Choosing the flat

Look for a leather lining, a stitched sole rather than glued, and a small amount of arch support. A pointed toe elongates the leg; an almond toe is kinder to wide feet.

Choosing the heel

Between 45 and 65 millimetres is the range most people can walk in all evening. A block heel set slightly forward under the heel bone is far more stable than one set at the very back.

Choosing the sneaker

Plain leather in white or off-white, minimal branding, and a sole that is not chunkier than the upper. It should look intentional with tailoring, not sporty.

Keep them alive

Rotate — never wear the same pair two days running. Use cedar trees, condition leather every few months, and replace heel tips before the metal shows.
