A 24-Piece Capsule Wardrobe That Actually Covers Your Year

Capsule wardrobes fail when they ignore real life. This one is built around the five situations most women dress for every week.

Build around situations, not seasons

List how many days a month you spend at work, at home, out in the evening, travelling and doing something physical. Allocate pieces in that proportion. Most capsules fail because they overweight evening wear.

The 24

  • Outerwear (3): a tailored coat, a lightweight trench, a casual jacket.
  • Tops (7): two white shirts, two fine knits, one striped tee, one silk blouse, one relaxed sweatshirt.
  • Bottoms (5): tailored trousers, straight jeans, wide-leg trousers, a midi skirt, one pair of shorts or lounge trousers.
  • Dresses (3): one day dress, one occasion dress, one easy knit dress.
  • Shoes (4): flats, a block heel, a clean sneaker, a boot.
  • Bags (2): a structured day bag and a small evening bag.

The two rules that make it work

Every top must pair with at least three bottoms. Every colour must appear at least twice. If a new purchase breaks either rule, it is a want, not a gap.

Reviewing it

Every three months, move anything unworn to the back. If it stays there for two reviews, sell it and replace it with the thing you keep reaching for and only own one of.
